Building Strong Readers

What is Phonics?

Phonics is a method of teaching children to read and write by connecting letters with their sounds. It helps children understand how sounds blend to form words, making reading natural and easier. Phonics builds a strong foundation for reading, spelling, and pronunciation.

At Tuvakkam, phonics is taught through fun, interactive, systematic, and multi-sensory methods. We use stories, actions, repetition, and engaging activities to help children recognize sounds and apply them in words. Children are encouraged to listen carefully, repeat confidently, and practice regularly.

Our approach ensures that children not only learn sounds but also gain the confidence to read independently and enjoy the learning process.

How Does Phonics Work?

Phonics works by teaching children to recognize individual letter sounds and blend them to form words. Children first learn basic sounds through stories, actions, and songs, making learning enjoyable and meaningful.

Once familiar with sounds, they progress to blending sounds to read words. Gradually, they learn to break words into sounds, which strengthens spelling skills. This structured progression—from sounds to words and words to sentences—helps children build confidence step by step.

With consistent practice, children begin to recognize word patterns and read more fluently. Phonics also improves pronunciation and listening skills. Over time, children develop the ability to read unfamiliar words independently, becoming confident learners.
